KEENE, N.H. – Eastern Connecticut State University had five runners finish in the top-15 of the race on its way to winning the 2017 Little East Conference Women's Cross Country Championship Saturday, hosted by Keene State College. Rhode Island College freshman Shayna Cousineau (Cranston, R.I.) took home the LEC individual title after finishing the 5K course in 19:19.9.

Eastern Connenticut was led by senior Kassandrah Banks (Wethersfield, Conn.), who placed second overall in 19:37.3. Junior Haley Knox (Bristol, Conn.) crossed the line in ninth with her time of 20:13.6, while classmate Samantha McKosky (Deep River, Conn.) and sophomore Rachel Osak (Portland, Conn.) placed 12th and 13th with respective times of 20:24.5 and 20:26.6.

Plymouth State was the runner-up in the team standings with 58 points, just eight back of the champions Warriors. Junior Haley Dennis (Coventry, R.I.) placed third in 19:45.6, while senior Rileigh Goulette (Saint Albans, Vt.) placed sixth in 19.58.0. Junior Lora Giguere (Tolland, Conn.) placed 10th in 20:15.5. 

Championship Notes:

  • This marked the first-ever team title win for Eastern Connecticut.
  • The Warriors became just the fourth program to win the LEC women's cross country title.
  • This was the first time since 1999 a team besides Keene State won the LEC title, the Owls won 17 in a row from 2000-16.
  • Shayna Cousineau is the first-ever individual LEC women's cross country champion for Rhode Island College.
