PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Eastern Connecticut State University women's volleyball team fell to host Johnson & Wales (R.I.) University Friday night in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, 3-0. The Warriors, who were the eighth-seeded in the regional, ended the season with an overall record of 23-7.
The top-seeded Wildcats, who are ranked No. 2 in the nation in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Poll, improved to 32-1 with the win and will next face SUNY New Paltz in the regional semifinals Saturday.
Sophomore Abby Stern (Manchester, Conn.) led Eastern with eight kills and three digs, while freshman Anna Barry (Andover, Conn.) added six kills and three digs. Fellow freshman Madison Bell (Salem, Conn.) led the Warriors with 11 digs.
Junior Maria Coniglio (Old Bethpage, N.Y.) hit .667 with a match-high 11 kills and one error on 15 swings to go along with nine digs to lead JWU, which hit .385 in the contest. Classmate Kate Walker (Oakland, Calif) hit .400 and totaling 10 kills, while fellow junior Brylee Frank (Palm City, Fla.) handed out a match-best 28 assists. Sophomore Elyssa Nicolas (San Francisco, Calif.) registered match-high 19 digs.
