GORHAM, Maine - The ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) announced Wednesdayevening that University of Southern Maine freshman outside hitter Jessica Williamson (Goffstown, N.H.) has been selected as its initial New England Division III Rookie of the Week following her outstanding play in the Huskies season-opening weekend sweep of Maine Maritime Academy and Saint Joseph’s College (Me.).
In the Huskies’ two matches last Saturday, Williamson racked up 32 kills and a .304 hitting percentage (32-11-69), 15 digs, one solo block and one block assist. The 5-foot-7 rookie played a major role in the Huskies getting off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2006 under first-year head coach Diane Newell. The Huskies win over Saint Joseph’s was their first against the Monks since 2006 and covered a span of 10 matches.
Against Maine Maritime, Williamson had 14 kills and a 286 hitting percentage (14-4-35) with eight digs. She came back later to post 18 kills with a 324 hitting percentage (18-7-34) and seven digs.
Southern Maine (3-0) travels to Massachusetts Maritime Academy on Saturday (1:00 p.m.) for a non-conference tri-match with MMA and Curry College.
