Tom Gardner Takes Over Southern Maine Volleyball Program

GORHAM, Maine – Four-time Desert Sky Region Champion coach Tom Gardner (Cave Creek, Ariz.) has joined the ranks of the coaching staff at the University of Southern Maine and will lead the Huskies' women's volleyball team for the Fall 2011 season. Gardner's hiring was announced this week by USM Director of Athletics Al Bean.

"Tom is a welcome addition to our coaching staff," noted Bean. "He has had tremendous success in his coaching career and he is enthusiastic about putting USM volleyball in a position to be competitive within the challenging Little East Conference."

Gardner comes to Southern Maine after a highly successful campaign as the varsity coach at Cactus Shadows High School (2007-2011) where he compiled a record of 45-1 in the Desert Sky Region, finishing as champion four times. His teams placed second in the state twice and third and fifth place finishes once. Gardner also served as a recruiter and scout for Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville, Tennessee from 2008-2011 and as the Club Director for Club Summit Volleyball from 2005-2011.

"I am very excited at the opportunity to build the volleyball program at the University of Southern Maine," commented Gardner. "I am anxious to take the court and begin working towards success. I hope to attract serious students who have a passion for playing volleyball and a competitiveness and will to win. Each athlete will play an integral part in the growth and development of the program."

Gardner earned his Master's of Education in Educational Leadership from Northern Arizona University in 2007 and his bachelor's degree in Advertising in 1993. Gardner also earned a Teaching Certification from Northern Arizona in 1997.
