MEDFORD, Mass. – The Rhode Island College women's tennis team registered a 5-2 win over Nazareth College Friday morning in the first round of the 2018 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament, hosted by Tufts University.
The Anchorwomen, who improved to 17-0 for the season, are making their first-ever NCAA tournament appearance after capturing the Little East Conference tournament championship, which included the league's automatic berth in the NCAA tournament. This marks just the second-ever NCAA tournament win for a LEC program, the first being Salem State's 5-1 first round victory over Gwynedd Mercy in 2012.
RIC won two of three doubles matches from the Golden Flyers (14-5) to start the day. Freshmen Victoria Vittori (New Bedford, Mass.) and Grace Zangari (Saunderstown, R.I.) got things going with an 8-2 win at No. 3 over Elizabeth Karstedt and Maeve Morgan before senior Dayna Reilly (Swansea, Mass.) and freshman Laurel Ten Eyck (Warwick, R.I.) posted an 8-4 victory over Erin Schantz and Maelah Nadeau at No. 1.
Reilly made quick work of Nadeau at No. 1 singles (6-1, 6-3) to give the Anchorwomen a 3-1 before freshman Serena Bobola (Cranston, R.I.) shut out Alaina Burgos 6-0, 6-0 at No. 5 singles to put RIC in front 4-2. Vittori then clinched the match with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Elena Alteri at No 6 singles.
The Anchorwomen will next face the Jumbos in a second round match Saturday.
