Mulry Lifts UMass Boston Women's Soccer to First Win Over Western Connecticut

BOSTON- Sophomore forward Kristin Mulry (Holbrook, Mass.) netted the day's only goal with just 6:30 remaining in the match, to lead the University of Massachusetts Boston women's soccer team over visiting Western Connecticut State University, 1-0, today in a Little East Conference match at the Clark Athletic Center Field on the campus of UMass Boston. The win is the first in program history against WCSU and snaps a 12-match losing streak against the Colonials. The Beacons increase their school-record unbeaten streak to nine straight matches to improve to 9-2-1 on the season and 3-0-1 in LEC play for their best start and record in school history, while Western Connecticut State falls to 6-7-0 and 2-2-0.

Mulry took a through ball pass from sophomore midfielder Brianna Cavanaugh (Belchertown, Mass.) and connected on a one-timer to the upper right corner of the net for her conference leading 12th goal of the season at 83:30 of the second half to give the Beacons a 1-0 lead that would hold as the game-decider. Over the final minutes, the Colonials were not able to get the equalizer as UMass Boston junior goalkeeper Michelle Cain (Essex, Mass.) turned away all seven shots she faced en-route to her third shutout of the season.

The Colonials benefited from a strong head wind in the first half and outshot the Beacons by an 8-2 margin at the break. UMass Boston was able to regroup and use the wind to its advantage in the second half collecting a 9-7 advantage in shots during the second frame.

With less than 15 minutes to play, Western Connecticut had its best scoring chance of the afternoon when freshman midfielder Tracy Sales (Cumberland, R.I.) broke free from the Beacons' defensive line. Sales fired a shot that had Cain beat but the wind corralled the shot, forcing it to sail just past the far post.

The shutout was the Beacons' fifth of the season, and fourth in as many matches, to contribute to a streak of 437:23 minutes without allowing a goal. Cain has now gone a school-record 392:23 minutes without allowing a goal to lower her goals against average to a conference low of 0.41 goals per game.

Sophomore keeper Molly Miller (Middlebury, Conn.) produced a solid effort in net for the Colonials stopping seven shots on the afternoon.

UMass Boston will be in action again when it travels to Keene, NH on Saturday, Oct. 17 to take on Keene State College at 1 p.m. in a Little East Conference showdown. Western Connecticut State travels to Scranton, Pa. to take on University of Scranton on Wednesday, Oct. 14 in a non-conference match.
