Four LEC Players Named to 2018-19 NEWBA All-Region Team, Five Picked for Senior All-Star Classic

PAWTUCKET, R.I. – Four Little East Conference (LEC) women's basketball student-athletes have been named to the 2019 New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) All-Region Team, it was announced by the organization Wednesday.

UMass Dartmouth forward Nakira Examond (New Bedford, Mass.) earned First-Team honors for the third consecutive season after leading the Little East in scoring (17.7 ppg), rebounding (9.9 rbg) and field goal percentage (58.9%). The senior was named the LEC Player of the Year for the second time in three seasons after leading the Corsairs (22-5) to the 2019 LEC regular season title and the teams second straight berth in the conference title game. Examond wrapped up her collegiate career as UMass Dartmouth's all-time leading scorer and rebounder with 1,675 career points and 1,035 career rebound.

Eastern Connecticut junior forward Mya Villard (Cromwell, Conn.) earned Second-Team All-Region honors for the first time in her career after averaging 16 points and 9.3 rebounds per contest for the 2019 LEC tournament champion Warriors, who finished the year with a record of 19-9 following their NCAA Division III Championship Tournament appearance. Villard was named a First-Team All-Little East selection for the season consecutive season after being named the 2016-17 LEC Rookie of the Year.

Warrior freshman forward Ana Barry (Andover, Conn.) and Rhode Island College freshman forward Willcia McBorrough (Providence, R.I.) both earned a spot on the NEWBA All-Rookie Team.

McBorrough was named the 2018-19 LEC Rookie of the Year after averaging 8.0 points and 7.4 rebounds per game while starting all 27 games for the Anchorwomen this season. She finished her rookie campaign ranked second in the conference in field goal percentage (57.6 percent), trailing only Examond.

Barry came on late in the season, averaging 11.8 points and 7.4 rebounds per game while shooting 56 percent from the floor over the final 13 games of the year.

In addition to her all-region selection, Examond was among the five LEC players selected to play in the 2019 NEWBA Senior All-Star Classic, which will be held on Saturday, March 23 at Blake Arena on the campus of Springfield College at 1 p.m. She will be joined by UMass Dartmouth guard Jess Korzec (West Brookfield, Mass.), Plymouth State guard/forward Jess Conant (Canton, Maine), Eastern Connecticut forward Kelsey Santagata (Stamford, Conn.) and Western Connecticut guard Jancy Sherwood (Poughquag, N.Y.).
