INDIANAPOLIS - The Eastern Connecticut State University women's basketball team will take on Johns Hopkins University in the opening round of the 2019 NCAA Division III Championship Tournament Friday in a game that will be contested at the University of Scranton at 5 p.m. The winner will face the winner of the first round game between the host Royals and New England College Saturday at 6 p.m.
The Warriors were one of 43 automatic qualifier recipients after winning the Little East Conference (LEC) tournament Saturday, defeating UMass Dartmouth 77-72 in overtime for their sixth consecutive win. This marks the 17th NCAA tournament appearance for Eastern Connecticut.
Johns Hopkins (22-4) received on of 20 at-large selections after falling to Haverford College in the Centennial Conference semifinals Saturday. The Blue Jays are among the teams receiving votes in the most recent D3hoops.com poll, which was through games played February 17.
New England College (19-9) and Scranton (25-2) both received automatic berths after winning their respective conference tournaments. The Pilgrims won the New England Collegiate Conference with a 61-40 win over Becker College, while the 12th-ranked Royals claimed the Landmark Conference crown with a 68-48 win over Elizabethtown University.
Second-round winners will advance to one of four sectional-round sites March 8-9. Winners of the four sectional games will advance to the semi-finals and finals March 15 and 16. All games, except the semi- finals and finals, will be played on the campuses of competing institutions. The semi-finals and finals will be conducted at the Allen County War Memorial Coliseum in Fort Wayne, Indiana.
