PAWTUCKET, R.I. – A pair of Little East Conference (LEC) women's basketball standouts were honored by the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA) this week. Rhode Island College freshman forward Willcia McBorrough (Providence, R.I.) was named the NEWBA Rookie of the Week, while Eastern Connecticut junior forward Mya Villard (Cromwell, Conn.) was one of six Honor Roll selections.
This marks the second NEWBA honor for McBorrough, who averaging 10 points and 12.5 rebound per game while shooting 52.9 percent (10-19) from the floor in a pair of conference wins for the Anchorwomen to close out the regular season. The reigning LEC Rookie of the had 10 points and 13 rebounds in a 68-59 win at Western Connecticut and tallied 10 points with 12 boards in a 63-52 win over UMass Boston.
Villard, the reigning LEC player of the Week, averaged 18 points and 11.5 rebounds per game while shooting 52.2 percent (12-23) in a pair of conference victories that propelled the Warriors to the No. 2 seed in this week's LEC tournament. She scored 21 points with 13 boards in a 61-56 overtime victory at Castleton before netting 15 points and pulling down 10 rebounds in just 23 minutes of Eastern's 80-50 win at Keene State. This s the third NEWBA honor for Villard this season.
