PAWTUCKET, R.I. – A pair of Little East Conference (LEC) women's basketball stars earned weekly honors from the New England Women's Basketball Association (NEWBA), it was announced Tuesday. Eastern Connecticut freshman forward Anna Barry (Andover, Conn.) was named the NEWBA Rookie of the Week, while UMass Dartmouth senior forward Nakira Examond was one of five Honor Roll picks.
Barry, who was also named LEC Rookie of the Week, averaging 14.5 points and nine rebounds per game while shooting 66.7 percent (12-18) from the floor in a 2-0 week for the Warriors. She posted career-high totals of 15 points and 11 rebounds for her first career double-double in a 59-52 win at Southern Maine before netting 14 points with seven boards in a 79-61 win over Western Connecticut.
The reigning LEC Player of the Week, Examond averaged 22 points and 11.3 rebounds per game while shooting 55.8 percent (24-43) from the field in a 2-1 week for the first-place Corsairs. She tallied 27 points on 11-of-14 shooting from the field while grabbing eight rebounds in a 110-83 win at Western Connecticut, and totaled 19 points and 12 boards in a 77-65 win over Rhode Island College. Examond capped the week with a 20-points, 14-rebound performance in an 89-87 overtime setback at Plymouth State.
