PAWTUCKET, R.I. – The baseball programs at the University of Southern Maine and UMass Boston are in the top-20 of this week's national poll conducted by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and D3baseball.com.
The Huskies slipped from eighth to 12th this week following a 1-1 start to the 2019 season last week, which saw them defeat MIT, 3-2, before falling to Trinity (Conn.), 5-4. Southern Maine's will return to action Friday against Amherst to kick off its seven-game Spring Break trip in Florida. The Huskies' southern trip will include games against No. 3 Rowan and a pair of teams receiving votes in TCNJ and Wisconsin-La Crosse.
The Beacons (2-3) are ranked 18th this week after sitting at No. 7 the week prior. UMass Boston went 1-2 in three games versus St. John Fisher to start their Florida trip – each game decided by two runs or less against the Cardinals, who are receiving votes in the poll – before dropping a two-run decision to now 25th-ranked Wheaton (Mass.), 5-3. The Beacons rebounded to post a 3-2 win over No. 17 Keystone yesterday (Tuesday), and will conclude their southern swing with games against Webster, Washington & Jefferson and Farmingdale State; Webster is ranked 15th this week, while W&J is among the teams receiving votes.
The NCBWA/D3baseball.com Top 25 is voted on by a panel of 25 Sports Information Directors and media members from across the country, and is published weekly. Full members of NCAA Division III are eligible.
