PAWTUCKET, R.I. – UMass Boston picked to win the 2019 Little East Conference (LEC) baseball championship after tallying 61 points and picking up five-of-nine first-place votes in this year's preseason coaches' poll, edging out the University of Southern Maine by a single point.
The two-time defending champion Beacons posted a record of 37-10 in 2018 as they claimed the LEC regular season and tournament championships and advanced to the championship round of the NCAA Division III New England Regional. UMass Boston will enter 2019 ranked No. 9 in the nation in both the College Baseball Newspaper and D3baseball.com preseason polls.
The Huskies, who accounted for the four remaining first-place votes, posted an overall record of 30-15 in 2018 while advancing to the NCAA Division III New York Regional final. Southern Maine is ranked 12th in the country in both the College Baseball Newspaper and D3baseball.com preseason polls.
UMass Dartmouth was picked to finish third by the LEC coaches after totaling 45 points, which was just one point better than Eastern Connecticut State University. Also predicted to qualify for the LEC tournament was Plymouth State University (30 points) and LEC-newcomer Castleton University (29 points). The Spartans, who are receiving votes in the 2019 College Baseball Newspaper Preseason Poll, won five consecutive North Atlantic Conference titles before departing that league after the 2018 campaign, and posted an overall record of 30-12 a year ago.
