PAWTUCKET, R.I. - Southern Maine senior Jake Dexter (Oakland, Maine) and UMass Dartmouth senior Matt Cronin (Framingham, Mass.) have been named First-Team Preseason All-Americans by D3baseball.com, it was announced Thursday. Dexter made the team as a utility player, while Cronin was one of three starting pitchers selected to the First Team.
Dexter earned First-Team All-America honors from De3baseball.com and the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) as a utility player as a junior. The 2018 LEC Player of the Year ranks among the premier second basemen and relief pitchers in the nation. He batted .382 with 71 hits, 13 doubles, three homers, 30 RBI and 36 runs scored while posting a 5-4 record with 13 saves in his 25 appearances on the mound; his 13 saves are the third-most in DIII this season. Dexter was additionally named the 2018 D3baseball.com New England Region Player of the Year, and was named a first-team all-region selection by the ABCA, D3baseball.com and the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA).
One of the most dominant pitchers in the nation, Cronin was named a First-Team All-American by D3baseball.com and a Second-Team All-American by the ABCA following his junior campaign. The 2018 LEC Pitcher of the Year went 6-1 on the hill while starting in 10 of his 11 appearances, totaling 67 strikeouts in 63.2 innings and posting a 0.99 ERA that ranks second in the nation. He was also named the New England Region Pitcher of the Year by the ABCA, D3baseball.com and the NEIBA in 2018.
