UMass Boston and Southern Maine Baseball Teams End Year with Top-25 National Rankings

PAWTUCKET, R.I. – The UMass Boston and University of Southern Maine baseball teams officially wrapped up the 2018 campaign as nationally ranked programs following the release of the final Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA)/Collegiate Baseball News polls of the year. 

UMass Boston ends the year ranked No. 6 in the ABCA/Collegiate Baseball News Poll and No. 10 in the Poll. Southern Maine wrapped the year ranked No. 17 in the final ABCA/Collegiate baseball News Poll and No. 18 in the Poll.

The Beacons finished the 2018 season with an overall record of 37-10 after advancing to the Division III New England Region Championship as the No. 1 seed. The 2018 Little East Conference (LEC) regular season and tournament championships posted regional wins over Penn State Berks (15-1) and Ramapo (2-1 and 7-5), but fell twice to regional champion SUNY Oswego (11-4 and 10-4).

The Huskies went 30-15 in this season while making their way to the Division III New York Region Championship for the second straight season, this time as the No. 3 seed. Southern Maine, which saw head coach Ed Flaherty win his 1,000th career game in 2018, posted victories over Amherst (3-2), Salisbury (1-0) and SUNY Cortland (12-10 in 10 innings) while dropping a pair of decisions to regional champion Swarthmore (9-6 and 9-3).
