Baseball Day 3 Recap: No. 1 UMass Boston and No. 2 Eastern Connecticut Advance to LEC Championship Round Saturday


No. 1 UMass Boston 7, No. 2 Eastern Connecticut 1 – Box Score

The Beacons scored the only two runs they would need in the bottom of the first, plating runs on singles from senior Dave Murphy's (Plymouth, Mass.) and sophomore Ryan McCormick's (Cumberland, R.I.). UMass Boston put the game out of reach with a three-run eighth as junior Charlie Huegi (Sandy Hook, Conn.) drove in a pair of runs on his triple down the right field line and then went home on classmate Eddie Riley's (Quincy, Mass.) center field double.

Junior Fernando Burgos (Hyde Park, Mass.) improved his record to 8-1 for the season after holding Eastern to one run on seven hits over 6.2 innings of work. Freshman Mike Doherty (Brewster, Mass.) earned his second save following 2.1 scoreless innings of relief.

The Warriors lone run came in the top if the sixth when freshman Anthony Stigler (Mansfield, Conn.) singled to left to plate classmate Jack Rich (Meriden, Conn.) from third. Senor Sam Kosterich (Stamford, Conn.) took the loss on the hill after allowing four runs on six hits and three walks over six innings, dropping his record to 3-3.

No. 6 UMass Dartmouth 6, No. 4 Rhode Island College 4 – Box Score

The Corsairs led 2-1 heading to the top of the sixth, where they scored four times to open a five-run advantage, which included RBI singles from juniors Pat Vartania (Canton Mass,) and Chris Wood (Berkley, Mass.) and a RBI-double off the bat of senior Josh O'Neil (Halifax, Mass.).

The Anchormen got back in the game with a three-run eighth. Senior Shaun Vigeant (Coventry, R.I.) came home as his younger brother, sophomore Nate Vigeant (Coventry, R.I.) drew a bases loaded walk before sophomore Sam Franco (Cranston, R.I.) crossed on a passed ball. Sophomore Josh Silva (Seekonk, Mass.) capped the scoring on senior Brad Douglas' (South Kingstown, R.I.) ground out to second. 

That was as close as RIC would get, as freshman Logan Maitland (Tiverton, R.I.) recorded three quick out after allowing a lead-off single in the bottom of the ninth to earn his sixth save of the season. Senior Ben Lodge (Blackstone, Mass.) improved to 4-3 for UMass Dartmouth after allowing one unearned run with five Ks in 6.2 innings.

No. 2 Eastern Connecticut 7, No. 6 UMass Dartmouth 4 - Box Score

The Warriors never trailed in this one, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the third before putting up four runs in the fifth, three of which came on junior Alex Parkos' (Meriden, Conn.) homer over the wall I left center, to take a 6-1 lead.

The Corsairs rallied with three runs in the bottom of the fifth to get back in the game. Two runs scored on sophomore Nate Tellier's (Attleboro, Mass.) double to left and another came home on sophomore Mitch Baker's (Briantree, Mass.) single to the gap in right center.

Those were the final runs of the game for UMass Dartmouth as sophomore Sam Gagnon (Andover, Mass.) tossed 4.1 dominant innings of relief to improve to 2-1 on the mound after, allowing just one hit while fanning six batters, including senior Mac Curran (Lakeville, Mass.) and junior Erick Ramirez (Boston, Mass.) for the final two outs of the game.
