Gabby Cyr Leads Huskies to Win at UNE Invitational

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) rallied after going off course to take the top spot and lead the University of Southern Maine women's cross country team to a first place finish at the University of New England Cross Country Invitational held Saturday at Rotary Park in Biddeford.

Southern Maine captured the team title by sweeping the first three spots on the way to a team score of 28 points. The Nor'easters took second place with 57 points, followed by Endicott College (63 points) and the University of Maine at Farmington (66 points). Daniel Webster College and Maine Maritime Academy also had incomplete teams participate.

Cyr, despite going off course just before the two-mile mark and having to overtake five runners to win the race, completed the hilly, 5,000-meter course with a time of 21 minutes, 5 seconds. Junior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury Union) came in second in 21:08, and sophomore Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) was third in 21:22.

Rounding out USM's top five finishers were sophomores Kayleigh Shrader (Kennebunk, Maine) in 10th place overall (nine scoring points) in 22:39 and Alexandra Raynor (Lamoine, Maine/Mount Desert Island) in 14th place (13 scoring points) in 23:02.

The Huskies will travel to Dartmouth, Mass., next Saturday for the annual University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational.
