Gabby Cyr Leads Huskies to Win at UNE Invitational

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Senior Gabby Cyr
(Fort Kent, Maine) rallied after going off course to take
the top spot and lead the University of Southern Maine women's
cross country team to a first place finish at the University of New
England Cross Country Invitational held Saturday at Rotary Park in
Biddeford.
Southern Maine captured the team title by sweeping the first three
spots on the way to a team score of 28 points. The
Nor'easters took second place with 57 points, followed by
Endicott College (63 points) and the University of Maine at
Farmington (66 points). Daniel Webster College and Maine Maritime
Academy also had incomplete teams participate.
Cyr, despite going off course just before the two-mile mark and
having to overtake five runners to win the race, completed the
hilly, 5,000-meter course with a time of 21 minutes, 5 seconds.
Junior captain Sarah Myrick (Weybridge, Vt./Middlebury
Union) came in second in 21:08, and sophomore
Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) was third in
21:22.
Rounding out USM's top five finishers were sophomores
Kayleigh Shrader (Kennebunk, Maine) in 10th place
overall (nine scoring points) in 22:39 and Alexandra Raynor
(Lamoine, Maine/Mount Desert Island) in 14th place (13
scoring points) in 23:02.
The Huskies will travel to Dartmouth, Mass., next Saturday for the
annual University of Massachusetts Dartmouth Invitational.
