Artesani Wins 400 meters; 4 records fall

NEW LONDON, Conn.  --  Sophomore Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) set two school records and won the 400 meters  to help the University of Southern Maine Huskies women's outdoor track and field team to a 12th place finish at the 2008 Division III New England Championships hosted by the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Conn.
    
Artesani won the 400 meters in a time of 58.05 seconds, and placed second in the 200 meters crossing the finish line in 25.65 seconds.  Her time in the 400 broke her week-old record of 58.33 set at the Little East Conference Championships.  Artesani's 200 time shaved .03 seconds off her old record of 25.68 set in May 2007 at the NEIcAAA Championships.
    
Senior Hattie Landry (Acton, Maine/Wells) earned Division III All-New England honors in two events with her fourth and fifth place finishes in the 100-meter hurdles and the long jump.  Landry finished the 100-meter hurdles finals in 15.53 seconds.  This came after she set a school record in the trials with a time of 15.43, besting her old mark of 15.46 set April 19 at Bowdoin.  In the long jump, Landry had a best mark of 5.12 meters (16-9 3/4).
    
Junior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) set a school record in the 1500 meters with her time of 4:45.67, breaking the old record of 4:47.34 set by Sara Marzouk in May 2005.  Cyr finished 11th among the 29 finishers in event, less than six seconds behind race winner Anna King of Colby College.
    
Artesani and Landry also helped the Huskies to a sixth place finish in the 4 x 100-meter relay, along with juniors Anna Biasin (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) and Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls, Maine/Lisbon), in a time of 51.03 seconds to earn Division III All-New England honors.
    
Freshman Hillary Hall (Waldoboro, Maine/Medomak Valley) also earned Division III All-New England honors, tying for sixth in the high jump by clearing 1.50 meters (4-11). 
    
The Huskies finished 12th among the 28 teams that scored in meet with 31.50 points.  Williams College won the team title with 111 points, followed by Amherst College in second place with 81 points.  Rounding out the top five teams were M.I.T. in third with 77 points, Middlebury College in fourth with 72, and Tufts University in fifth with 66.50 points.
    
Southern Maine returns to action May 8-10 at the NEIcAAA Outdoor Championships hosted by the University of New Hampshire in Durham, N.H.  The heptathlon begins on Thursday and the rest of the championship events will be held Friday and Saturday.
