Warriors host 1st meet; 15 personal records set

MANSFIELD, Conn. -- Performing in front of its home fans in the first home track and field meet in the program’s 31-year history, the 2008 Eastern Connecticut State University women’s track and field team established seven post-season qualifying times and set 15 personal records Saturday in a non-scoring meet with Colby Sawyer College and Smith College.

The meet was the first collegiate one at the eight-lane Mansfield Outdoor Complex Track Facility, which was dedicated back on Sept. 13, 2005. Although Eastern had staged a handful of meets on area facilities since the women joined the track and field program in 1978, Saturday’s meet was the first at its own “on-campus” facility.

More than 40 track and field alumni were present, with a number of them competing on an exhibition basis in the non-scoring meet. John Keleher, who coached the first three seasons of the men’s program before Wayne Westcott took when the program became co-ed in 1978, fired the starters’ pistol to kick off an Alumni Mile which involved a dozen former Eastern track and field competitors.

During the meet, six Eastern competitors established a total of seven qualifying times, heights and distances for next month’s New England and ECAC championships. In addition, nine athletes posted a total of 15 personal records.

Led by freshman Karina Johnson (East Hartford), seven individuals collected a total of ten individual titles. Johnson, who set program records at 800 meters and in the mile during the indoor season, won the 400 (59.10), 800 (2:35.65) and 1,500 (5:13.15) Saturday. Sophomore indoor triple jump record holder Monica Mills (East Hartford) claimed her specialty with a personal-best outdoor mark of 34-8 ½ and was also the winner in the 400 hurdles (1:10.53) and ran the third leg of the winning 4x100 and 4x400 relays.

Those winning one event each were juniors Nidia Gonzalez Lopez (Cromwell) and Natalie Ruggiero (Wallingford), sophomores Sandra Brautigam (Scotland), and Amber Petrizzo (Plainville), and freshman Katherina Sovero (New Milford). Gonzalez Lopez won the 5,000 (19:41.26), Ruggiero the javelin (112-6), Brautigam the 100 hurdles (17.08), Petrizzo the 200 (26.46) and Sovero the discus (96-8).

Johnson’s time in the 400 put her into the Division III New England and ECAC championships next month, while Petrizzo earned a spot in the Division III New England meet in the 200 and 400 (1:01.63). Junior Katie La Marr (Cromwell) qualified for the ECAC meet in the long jump (16-8 ¾), seniors Shontel Tedeschi (Rockville) in the 100 hurdles (17.18) and Saryn Evans (Willimantic) in the 400 (1:02.37).

La Marr established personal records in all three of her individual events: the long jump, 100 (12.8) and 200 (28.50), Sovero in the shot (27-2 ¾) and hammer (96-9), freshman Courtney Green (Moosuup) in the discus (68-2) and hammer (55-0), sophomore Megan Holt (Burnham, ME) in the discus (75-9) and hammer (114-11), freshman Ashley James (Franklin) in the 400 hurdles (1:15.40) and long jump (15-3 ½), Petrizzo in the 200, Tedeschi in the triple jump (31-7 ½) and sophomore Nicole Stefanik (Coventry, RI) in the discus (88-5).

Eastern also won both relays, taking the 4x100 in a time of 50.9 and the 4x400 in a time of 4:27.1. Joining Mills on both relays were Petrizzo and Evans. La Marr ran the opening leg of the 4x100 and Johnson the anchor of the 4x400.

Eastern competes at the Springfield College Invitational Saturday at noon in its final tuneup before the April 26 conference championship meet.
