Adams races to All-American in 10K

OSHKOSH, WIS. 5/24/07 - Keene State College
junior Jennifer Adams raced to All-American honors
with her fourth place finish in the 10,000-meter race at the NCAA
Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship held at the
University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh's Titan Stadium on Thursday
night.
Adams from Saratoga Springs, N.Y. posted a time of 35:22.52.
Shauneen Garrahan, a senior from Amherst College
won the race with a J.J. Keller Field record time of 34:48.19.
After a slow start, Adams said the race quickly changed gears.
"Suddenly the pace picked up," she said. "I tried to stay with the
leaders, but I died a little bit."
"I have no regrets, Adams said. "I gave it everything I had."
Adams' time was well off her qualifying mark of 34:47.55 set at the
Penn Relays. "I think the wind had a lot to do with it," said KSC
Coach Peter Thomas. "I was satisfied with her
race."
Adams becomes a four-time All-American for the Owls. In 2005-06,
she earned All-America in cross country and on the track. Adams was
a member of KSC's national champion distance indoor medley relay
team and placed fourth in the 10,000-meter race at the outdoor
championships.
This season has had its share of up-and downs for the junior. After
coming up short in her bid for cross country All-American, she
suffered through a series of illnesses during the winter and
finished a disappointing ninth in the indoor mile.
Adams will be looking to add another All-American honor when she
races in the 5,000-meter race on Saturday. "I'd really like to do
well in the 5K," she said. "It's a race that I haven't been able to
do well in the past few years." Hopefully, I can shake out, and
have a good performance."
Thomas said it will be a bonus if Adams can double up with a pair
of All-American awards. She is seeded 12th in the race.
In the meantime, Thomas and Adams will cheer on Walpole, N.H.,
native Sarah Miller, who is racing in the trials
of the 800-meter event on Friday. Seeded ninth in the race, Miller
has to move up just one sport to earn her fourth All-American
honor. She placed fifth in the event at the indoor nationals.
