Fleming Wins New England Division III High Jump Championship

BRUNSWICK, Maine -
Rhode Island College senior Kayla Fleming (Pawtucket, R.I.) cleared 1.63 meters to win the high jump event this afternoon at the 2009 New England Division III Women's Indoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by Bowdoin College. Fourteen Little East Conference student-athletes earn All-New England honors, paced by the University of Southern Maine's six honorees. The Huskies led the Little East contingent in the 24-team field with a 11th place showing (21.5 total points).

MIT sat atop the team standings with 134 points, while Williams College (118), and Tufts University (108) followed in suit. Rhode Island College (14th, 13), Eastern Connecticut State University (17th, 7), the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (19th, 5), and Keene State College (21st, 4) filled out the Little East teams.

Fleming was the lone student-athlete in the 17-person field to clear 1.60 meters in the high jump, winning the competition at a height of 1.63 meters (5-04.25). Freshman Kimberly Mangum (Providence, R.I.) broke the program's record in the triple jump with a sixth place leap of 11.05 meters (36-03.00).

Southern Maine junior Emily Artesani (Orono, Maine) led the University of Southern Maine with a pair of All-New England honors. She set a Huskies' record in the 400-meter race with a fourth place time of 59.32. Artesani also earn a spot on the awards podium in the 200-meter race, covering the course in 26.88. Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine) posted an NCAA Division III provisional mark in the pole vault by clearing 3.55 meters (11-07.75). Dumas and Emily Hwang of MIT each topped out at 3.55 meters, but Hwang was awarded second on a judge's decision. Sophomore Christina Connolly (Boise, Idaho) gave Southern Maine another scoring mark in the pole vault with a fifth place height of 3.10 meters (10-02.00). Senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent, Maine) and freshman Amy McIntire (Raymond, Maine) each earned regional recognition in the mile run (5:19.60) and the long jump (5.09m), respectively.

Junior Brittany Kitt (Bloomfield, Conn.) led Eastern Connecticut State University with an all-regional honor in each of the two throwing events. She was the top Little East performer in the shot put (5th, 11.86m) and 20-pound weight throw (7th, 13.95m). Sophomore Amber Petrizzo (Plainville, Conn.) joined Artesani in the awards ceremony for the 400-meter dash (8th, 1:00.75).

The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth had two student-athletes earn All-New England recognition. Sophomore Jermai Henderson (Brockton, Mass.) was sixth in the shot put (11.70m), while classmate Linee Frost-Mello (New Bedford, Mass.) was seventh in the 55-meter hurdles (9.16).

Sophomore Amy Knoblock (Plymouth, Mass.) was the lone Keene State representative on the awards stand, placing sixth in the 600-meter run (1:38.84).
