Southern Maine Sweeps Little East Indoor Track Titles For 9th Straight Year

GORHAM, Maine -- The University of
Southern Maine women's indoor track and field team pulled off
another double Saturday winning the New England Alliance and Little
East Conference championships for the ninth consecutive year.
The Huskies edged out runner up Westfield State College, 125-112,
in the Alliance meet for the closest team finish since 2003.
Rhode Island College was third with 109 points followed by
Worcester State College with 101 points.
The Huskies captured the Little East title over second place Rhode
Island College, 163-133. Keene State College was third with
101 points.
The New England Alliance meet consists of school representing the
Little East Conference and the Massachusetts State College Athletic
Conference (MASCAC). Each conference scores its respective
champion from the Alliance results.
Southern Maine won two Alliance events. Junior Emily
Artesani (Orono, Maine) took the top spot for the third
straight year in the 400 meters with her time of 1 minute, 0.98
seconds. Artesani finished second in the 200 meters with a
time of 27.09 seconds and fourth in the 55-meter dash with a time
7.69.
Freshman Bethany Dumas (Augusta, Maine) made a big
splash in her first Alliance meet winning the pole vault with a
school and meet record height of 3.66 meters (12-0). That
height broke the school record of 11-9 3/4 (3.60 meters) set by
Melissa Bellemore in February 2006 and the meet
record of 11-7 set by Bellemore the same year. Dumas also
improves upon her NCAA Division III provisional qualifying
mark.
Others picking up second place finishes were sophomore
Hillary Hall (Waldoboro, Maine) in the high jump
(1.60 meters/5-3) and junior Sarah Myrick (Weybridge,
Vt.) in the 3,000 meters (11:03.12).
Earning third place results were sophomore Christina
Connolly (Boise, Idaho) in the pole vault (3.05
meters/10-0), senior Emily Poliquin (Lisbon Falls,
Maine/Lisbon) in the triple jump (10.87 meters/35-8),
sophomore Carly Dion (Biddeford, Maine) in the 800
meters (2:25.00) and senior Gabby Cyr (Fort Kent,
Maine) in the mile (5:27.96). Dion was one spot
behind Cyr in the mile (5:28.22).
Southern Maine will send its qualified competitors to the New
England Division III Championships to be held next weekend at
