Dumas Earns ECAC Praise
GORHAM, Maine -- Freshman Bethany Dumas
(Augusta, Maine) of the University of Southern Maine
women’s indoor track and field team has been selected the by
the ECAC (Eastern College Athletic Conference) as its Women’s
Division III Field Athlete of Week for the week of December 8-14.
The announcement was made today by the ECAC office in
Centerville, Mass.
In her first collegiate meet, Dumas won the pole vault competition
at the Preseason Invitational held Saturday at Bowdoin College.
Dumas cleared 3.49 meters (11-5 1/4), a mark that provisionally
qualifies her for the NCAA Division III National Championships in
March. She also
qualified for the New England Division III Championships and the
NEIcAAA New England Championships (all divisions) in February, and
the ECAC Division III Championships in March.
In addition to winning the pole vault, Dumas, who also was named
the Little East Conference Women’s Field Athlete of the Week
on Monday, placed second in the 55-meter hurdles with a time of
9.71 seconds, and fourth in the long jump with a leap of 4.61
meters (15-1 1/2).
Southern Maine is off the next four weeks for end-of-the-semester
exams and the holidays. The Huskies return to action on January 10
at the Dartmouth College Relays.
