Western Connecticut Advances To Championship Match

DANBURY, Conn. - The Western Connecticut State University women's tennis team will host Bridgewater State College in the Little East Conference Championship on Tuesday, Oct. 27 at 2 p.m. The Colonials advanced to the title match following their 5-2 victory over UMass Dartmouth in the semifinals at Westside Courts on Sunday afternoon.

Top seeded WestConn, which improves to 12-2 on the season, will meet the third seeded Bears, which cruised to a 5-1 victory over #2 Salem State College on Sunday in the league's other semifinal match.

Against the Corsairs, WestConn jumped out to a 2-1 lead following the doubles' competition. Lauren Post (Danbury, Conn.) and Jenna Kosiba (Bristol, Conn.) defeated Amy Lopes (Dartmouth, Mass.) and Courtney Morey (Mashpee, Mass.) at No. 1 doubles, 8-5 to close out the pairs action.

Previously, Alyssa and Brittany Hoynack (Old Lyme, Conn.) cruised to an 8-0 victory over Amber Ubertini (Dalton, Mass.) and Kelsey Grossman (Holliston, Mass.) at second doubles pairs. Blair Dalrymple (North Attleboro, Mass.) and Juliet Levangie (Middleboro, Mass.) earned a point for UMass Dartmouth with an 8-1 win over Maxx Zimmer (Sandy Hook, Conn.) and Kelly Macey (New Fairfield, Conn.) at third doubles.

First to finish in the singles competition was Alyssa Hoynack at third singles, quickly ousting Grossman, 6-0, 6-2.

Lopes, the 2008 LEC Player of the Year, rebounded nicely to capture the top singles match, 6-2, 6-2 over Post.

Ahead, 3-2, Kosiba brought WestConn within one victory after she finished off Morey at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 6-1.

The elder Hoynack closed out the match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ubertini at second singles.

Matches between Brittany DiMauro (Torrington, Conn.) and Levangie and Alison Mahony (Bristol, Conn.) vs Dalrymple were halted early after the Colonials had clinched the team victory with five wins.

During the regular season, WestConn defeated Bridgewater State, 8-1.

The Colonials will attempt to capture their first LEC Championship title and advance to the 2010 NCAA Division III National Championships in the spring while the Bears captured the 2007 LEC crown.
