Bridgewater State Upsets Salem State; Advances to Championship Match

SALEM, Mass. -- The Bridgewater State Bears upset the Salem State Lady Vikings in the semifinals of the Little East Conference Championship on Sunday afternoon. The No. 3 seeded Bears swept the doubles matches en route to a 5-1 win over the host and No. 2 seeded Lady Vikings.
Bridgewater State (11-3) gained the early momentum by winning all three doubles matches to earn the first three points. Lauren Donnelly (Centerville, Mass.) and Jessica Francis (West Barnstable, Mass.) teamed up for an 8-6 victory at first doubles by defeating Megan Cote (Fall River, Mass.), and Jess Distler (Pepperell, Mass.). Rachel Elman (Rehoboth, Mass.) and Paulina Ucher (Webster, Mass.) took an 8-2 decision at second doubles over Alicia Poore (Stoneham, Mass.) and Patty Quartararo (Lexington, Mass.). Finally, Catarina Rosa (Fall River, Mass.) and Julie Kraby (Wrentham, Mass.) won No. 3 doubles with an 8-6 win against Carly Muniz (Gloucester, Mass.) and Michelle McEwen (Billerica, Mass.)
Megan Cote won the lone point for Salem State (8-3) with a 6-4, 6-0, win over Donnelly. Cote completed her senior campaign a perfect, 10-0 at the top flight singles position.
Needing only two more points to secure the necessary five points for victory, the Bears won the next two points at No. 3 and No.4 singles respectively. Rosa defeated Muniz, 6-1, 6-4, and, Ucher beat Distler 6-2, 6-0.
The Bears will face the winner between No. 1 seed Western Connecticut and No. 4 seed UMass-Dartmouth on Tuesday, Oct. 27.
Salem State completed its season with the most wins for the program in over thirteen years.
