Ledin, Mulry Lead UMass Boston Past UMass Dartmouth, 2-0
BOSTON – Led by their top-two scorers in
Krista Ledin (Bridgewater, Mass.) and Kristin Mulry (Holbrook,
Mass.), the fourth-seeded Beacons (13-6-1) cruised to a 2-0 win
over the fifth-seed UMass Dartmouth Corsairs (7-11-2) in the
first-round of the 2011 Little East Conference Women's Soccer
tournament.
The victory moves the Beacons into the semifinal round, where they
will face the regular-season champions Keene State College on
Friday.
Wednesday's match marked the third time that UMass Boston and UMass
Dartmouth faced each other in the first round of the conference
tournament. The last time the two faced each other was in 2009,
when UMass Boston, who was the third seed that year defeated the
Corsairs by the final score of 4-0. They also met in 2008, with the
Beacons earning a 4-0 victory as the fourth-seed.
Ledin was the first to find the back of the net in Wednesday's
match. The freshman forward made a great move towards the Corsairs
goal, and just as she entered the goal box, she ripped a shot,
which was deflected down by goalkeeper Stephanie Borges. Even with
the initial save, Ledin did not stop as she drove home her own
rebound to the far post to make it 1-0 in the 53rd minute.
Seventeen minutes later, it was Mulry's turn as she knocked in a
loose ball that was headed into the box from defender Samantha
Place (Newton, N.J.) off of a corner kick. Also picking-up the
assist on the play was Brittany Spencer (West Brookfield, Mass.)
who took the corner kick. Spencer drove the ball to the far post,
where Place leaped up and headed it down. Still bouncing in the
box, Mulry managed to get her foot to it, and snuck it past the
Corsairs defense.
Prior to UMass Boston taking their 2-0 lead, Wednesday match was a
stalemate. Neither team was able to mount any type of offense
through the first 45 minutes of play. Prior to the halftime break,
the Beacons managed just eight shots in the half, while the defense
held UMass Dartmouth to zero shots.
After the intermission, the Beacons' offense came alive, as they
combined for 12 shots in the final 45 minutes of play, which
included solid chances from Kellie Gomes (Halifax, Mass.) and Sam
Cristoforo (Rockland, Mass.).
Place along with Alli Modzelewski (Newtown, Conn.), Jaime Ledin
(Bridgewater, Mass.), and Spencer neutralized any threat from the
Corsairs. Their hard nose play allowed the offense to build
momentum and eventually find the back of the net. The shutout
marked the 12th of the season for the Beacons, as goalkeeper Dani
Perkins notched just one save in the win. Borges totaled nine saves
and faced a total of 20 shots from UMass Boston.
The Beacons also managed a 10-3 advantage in corner kicks, with
seven of those coming in the first half of play.
UMass Boston will travel to Keene State on Friday for the semifinal
round. Start time has not yet been determined. Friday's contest
will mark the fourth consecutive year that the Beacons have
advanced to the semi-final round of the Little East tournament.
