MacDonald Lifts Warriors Past Brewers In 3 OTs

MANSFIELD, Conn. - Junior midfielder
Taylor MacDonald (Oak Bluffs, Mass.) made certain
that the longest match in Eastern Connecticut State University
women's lacrosse history went down in the recordbooks on a positive
note with a game-ending sudden-death overtime goal that gave the
Warriors an 11-10 win over Vassar College Wednesday afternoon at
the Mansfield Outdoor Complex.
The match was the first at home this year and resulted in the first
victory of the season for Eastern (1-3), which was not facing a
nationally-ranked opponent for this first time in 2009. It was the
first meeting between the Warriors and Vassar (2-2).
MacDonald scored three of Eastern's final four goals and assisted
on the other, finally ending the historic match by scoring a
game-ending goal 10:34 into overtime by scoring her team-leading
fourth goal of the match.. The match lasted 70 minutes and 34
seconds.
The teams played to a 10-10 tie through 60 minutes of regulation.
Neither team scored in the first (non-sudden-death) six-minute
overtime period and neither team scored in the next three-minute
sudden-death overtime period. MacDonald scored the decisive goal
with 1:34 gone in the third (sudden-death) overtime period.
With nine points, MacDonald totaled the ninth-most points in a
match in program history. She complemented her four goals with five
assists. The five assists equal the third-most in a match in
program history.
Eastern trailed 9-5 with 6:20 left in the first period, but allowed
Vassar only one goal the rest of the way. The Warriors scored the
final two goals of the first half and the first two goals of the
second half (both by MacDonald) to tie the match at 9-all. Neither
team scored in the final 12 minutes of regulation. Although it came
with a full 12 minutes left in the second period, sophomore
midfielder Ashley Del Vecchio (Fairfield, Conn.)
forced overtime when she netted her third goal of the match on a
pass from MacDonald to pull the Warriors even at 10-all. Del
Vecchio had managed only one goal in the first three matches of the
season.
In one of her finest all-around games, MacDonald also won eight
ground balls, captured five draws and caused three turnovers.
Senior midfielder Jessica Richards (Somers, Conn.)
won 13 of 18 faceoffs that helped net Eastern a decisive 17-8
advantage in draw controls.
With the score tied 3-3, the Brewers outscored Eastern 6-2 to carry
a 9-5 lead into the final six minutes of the first half. Katama
Martellucci and Sarah Warner each had two of those goals and
Martellucci also assisted on one.
Eastern plays the first of three matches in West Palm Beach Sunday
with a 10 a.m. encounter with MIT.
