Coro's 33 Points Lifts Anchorwomen Past Corsairs

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Sophomore guard
Stephanie Coro (North Providence, R.I.) scored a career-high 33
points as the Rhode Island College women’s basketball team
defeated UMass Dartmouth, 64-41, in Little East Conference action
on Tuesday night at The Murray Center.
Coro shot 11-for-19 from the field, connected on five
three-pointers and was perfect from the free throw line (6-for-6)
as she scored the most points in a game this season by an Little
East women's player, breaking Keene State’s Kristin
Degou’s previous high-mark of 29 set earlier this year.
The Anchorwomen (11-7, 3-5) win for the second straight game, while
the Corsairs (7-11, 2-6) see a modest two-game win streak come to
an end.
Sophomore forward Rachel Riley (Coventry, R.I.) helped pace the RIC
attack with her seventh-double of the season with 12 points and a
game-high 14 rebounds. Surprisingly, only three other Anchorwomen
scored a point in the win, led by junior guard Lauren
Harrington’s (Exeter, R.I.) nine-point and senior guard
Denise Scott (Yonkers, N.Y.) eight-point efforts.
Coro was hot from the get-go, nailing two three-pointers, combined
with two buckets by Scott, to put the hosts up, 10-2, at the 15:57
mark of the first half. UMass Dartmouth battled back with a 6-4 run
to pull within four, 14-10, on a sophomore guard Stephanie Houtman
(New Bedford, Mass.) jump shot at 12:10.
Coro once again paced an offensive outburst to build a seven-point
cushion, 18-11, with just over 10 minutes left to play in the first
half. The Corsairs stormed back, eventually trimming their deficit
to two points, 21-19, on a jumper by freshman guard Jessica Howlett
(North Quincy, Mass.) with 5:58 left.
The Anchorwomen went into the half up by six as a circus shot by
Scott from the baseline gave the hosts a 30-24 lead.
In the second half, it took 3:15 for either team to score as a
Riley free throw finally broke the ice. From then on, it was all
Rhode Island College. Two Coro free throws gave RIC a double-digit
lead, 37-27, at 15:27. After a Riley jump shot put RIC up by 12,
the hosts would never see their advantage dip below 11 for the
remainder of the game.
A jumper by senior forward Christina Coro (North Providence, R.I.)
equaled RIC’s largest lead, 27 points, 64-37, with 2:26 left
as RIC sailed to its 11th win of the year.
UMD junior guard Lynley DeAmato (Melrose, MASS.) led the visitors
with eight points.
In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East
Conference play when it travels to UMass Boston on Saturday, Jan.
30.
