Kate White Becomes Beacons' All-Time Kills Leader

BOSTON - Junior outside hitter Kate
White (Plymouth, Mass.) spiked for seven kills to give her
875 for a new career school-record as the University of
Massachusetts Boston volleyball team defeated visiting Pine Manor
College this evening, 25-8, 25-15, 25-22, at the Clark Athletic
Center on the campus of UMass Boston. The Beacons win their 10th
straight match and 12 of their last 13 to improve to 19-7 on the
season for their highest win total since 1999 when they finished
22-5 for the season. The Gators fall to 7-15 on the year.
White put down the record-breaking kill to give UMass Boston a
22-20 lead in the third set and surpass Laurel
Smith (2000-02), who compiled 873 kills. White also
finished with three digs and a block assist, while junior outside
Kate McWhorter (Bakersfield, Calif.) smashed a
match-high nine kills and hit a scorching .583 in just two sets in
addition to a dig. Freshman setter Cassy Hanneman (Denver,
Colo.) controlled the offense with 28 assists and added
four kills and three digs, while freshman outside hitter
Leigh Nawoichik (South Hamilton, Mass.) put down a
career-high five kills to go with a dig. Junior libero
Megan MacAuley (Upland, Calif.) anchored the
defense with a team-high 10 digs.
Senior middle hitter Amanda Dennis (Haverhill, Mass.) swung for
five kills and hit .333 for the match to lead Pine Manor in
addition to scooping a dig, while freshman middle hitter Jennifer
Gross (Coral Springs, Fla.) also spiked for five kills and added
three digs and three total blocks. Junior setter Kelly Pirzl
(Dalton, Mass.) directed the offense with 12 assists and fired a
pair of aces to go with five digs, while senior outside hitter
(Haverhill, Mass.) got down for 10 digs and also served up an
ace.
The Beacons will be in action again when they travel to North
Dartmouth, MA to take on University of Massachusetts Dartmouth in
the first of two Little East Conference matches on Saturday,
October 25 at 12:00 p.m., while the Gators host Rivier College on
October 23 at 7:00 p.m.
