USM's Jasud, Gomes Qualify for NCAA National Championship Race

GORHAM, Maine -- Junior Tyler Jasud (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley) and freshman Alex Gomes (Peabody, Mass.) of the University of Southern Maine men’s cross country team will be among the 280 competitors that step to the starting
line next Saturday (November 22) at the 2008 NCAA Division III National Championship.

The entire NCAA field of 32 teams and 56 individual qualifiers was announced Sunday afternoon. The national championship race will be hosted by Hanover College in Hanover, Indiana.

Jasud and Gomes qualified as individual competitors based upon their finishes at yesterday’s NCAA New England Regional event held in Williamstown, Mass. Jasud came across the finish line in 11th place after completing the 8,000-meter course in 26 minutes, 32.4 seconds, followed by Gomes in 16th place with a time of 26:39.1. Both received All-New England recognition for placing among the top 35 finishers.

This is the first time in the history of the USM men’s cross country program that more than one competitor has qualified for the NCAA national championship race. The past two years, former standout Curtis Wheeler represented the Huskies at the national championship race.
