Male Runner of the Week
Curtis Wheeler (Derby, Vt.), Senior, University of Southern Maine
Senior Curtis Wheeler of the University of Southern Maine Huskies won the individual championship at the 2007 State of Maine Intercollegiate Cross Country Championship, leading the Huskies to a second place finish in the team championship. The Derby, Vt. product became the first Southern Maine men's runner to capture the individual champion in the 40-year history of the championship. Wheeler covered the eight-kilometer course in a time of 25 minutes, 54.9 seconds, defeating a field of 124 runners and earning All-State honors.
Female Runner of the Week
Karina Johnson (E. Hartford, Conn.), Freshman, Eastern Connecticut State University
Johnson raced to a second place finish on her home course during a tri-meet with Bryant College and Rhode Island College this past weekend. She was the first Warriors' harrier to cross the 5-kilometer finish line, sporting a in a time of 20 minutes and 39 seconds. Johnson was paced Eastern Connecticut in all four meets she has raced in this season, including winning the Fitchburg State Invitational earlier this season.
