Keene State Leads Little East at New England Division III Men's Indoor Championships

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Keene State College sophomore Bryan Kolacz (Brentwood, N.H.) captured the the 35-pound weight throw this afternoon at the New England Division III Men's Indoor Track and Field Championships to lead the Owls to eighth in the 24-team field. The University of Southern Maine won the 4X400-meter relay to help the Huskies place 10th in the overall standings.

Williams College raised the team trophy with 145 total points, outdistancing Tufts University (104) and MIT (104). Rhode Island College (19th, 8), the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth (21st, 5), and Eastern Connecticut State University (24th, 1) rounded out the Little East contingent.

Kolacz reached a provisional NCAA Division III qualifying mark with his toss of 17.41 meters (57-01.50). He was the lone student-athlete in the 14-man field to register a throw over 17 meters.   

Keene State College had four other athletes record points in the regional championship meet. Senior Peter Najem (Derry, N.H.) covered the 600-meter run course in a time of 1:22.08 to earn second place. The Owls' duo of junior Jared Samuel (Londonderry, N.H.) and sophomore Brandon Schillemat (Nelson, N.H.) were fourth and fifth in the 5,000-meter race with times of 15:20.42 and 15:26.80, respectively, while senior Jason Garrity (Topsfield, Mass.) clipped the tape at 4:23.77 for seventh in the mile run. The Keene State 4X800-meter relay team of sophomore Jeff Tretheway (Merrimack, N.H.), senior Patrick Craven (North Kingstown, N.H.), Najem, and junior Craig MacPherson (Derry, N.H.) outdistanced by UMass Dartmouth for third.


Rhode Island College senior Dante Lopardo (Johnston, R.I.) recorded a pair of top-seven performances for the Anchormen. He cleared 1.92 meters (6-03.50) for third in the high jump, while leaping 6.51 meters (21-04.25) for seventh in the long jump.
