Dinas 4th in high jump at New England Open
BOSTON - Eastern Connecticut State University sophomore Gregory Dinas (Stamford) earned All-New England honors in the high jump and the women's 4x400 meter relay team established a program record on the second day of the New England Indoor Open Championships at the Track and Tennis Center on the Boston University campus Saturday.
Seeded 11th in the event, Dinas posted a height of 6-6 ¼ to place fourth behind three performers from the University of Connecticut. Dinas, who placed in a tie for 12th a year ago in this event at this meet, was one of seven participants Saturday to reach 6-6 ¼ , but was awarded fourth place based on jumps. The Little East Conference high jump champion, Dinas holds the program record in the high jump (6-7).
The women's 4x400 meter relay was timed in 4:04.87 to break the previous record set at last year's Open by just under two seconds, placing 17th overall in a field of 21. Senior Saryn Evans (Willimantic) and sophomore Monica Mills (East Hartford) repeated on the relay from a year ago, and were joined this year by freshmen Amber Petrizzo (Plainville) and Karina Johnson (East Hartford).
After qualifying provisionally for the NCAA Division III meet Friday in the preliminaries of the 800 meters, Johnson registered a tenth place finish in Saturday's final in a time of 2:23.29. In an original field of 29, Johnson was seeded seventh in the trials after breaking her own record in the preliminaries with a time of 2:16.00.
Among 25th teams, the men's 4x400 meter relay placed 12th in a time of 3:23.13. Contributors were seniors Archie Joseph (Livingston, NJ) and Mykal Kuslis (Watertown), freshman Mike D'Elia (Windham) and sophomore Chris Gemske (West Hartford).
Eastern competes in the ECAC Division III Championships this coming Friday and Saturday at Harvard University.
