Eastern Connecticut sets 16 personal records at Harvard Invitational

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Sophomore Gregory Dinas (Stamford/Brien McMahonHS) broke his own record in the 60 meter hurdles and tied his record in the high jump in qualifying for the ECAC championship in that event at the Harvard University Invitational Saturday at the Gordon Track and Tennis Center.

Dinas was one of 16 individuals to establish personal bests at the non-scoring meet and among four performers to qualify for post-season competition.

Dinas broke his own record of 8.99 in the 60 meter hurdles set last year at Harvard with a mark of 8.92 in placing eighth in a field of 25 in that event. He also tied his program record of 6-4 ¾ in the high jump which he had set as a freshman at the U.S. Coast Guard Academy, a standard that qualified him for the ECAC Division III Championship in March. His leap placed him third in a field of 17.

Also qualifying for post-season competition with personal-best performances were sophomore Chris Gemske (West Hartford/Hall HS) at 200 meters (23.11), and  juniors Tyler Banville (Rockville/Rockville HS) in the 35-pound weight (46-4) and Matt Pyne (Wallingford/Sheehan HS) in the pole vault (13-5- ¼). Gemske qualified for both the New England Division III and ECAC meets and placed fifth among 82 entrants. Banville and Pyne qualified for the New England Division III meet. Banville took ninth place in a field of 32 and Pyne was seventh among 18.

Others attaining personal bests were senior Andrew Brunswick (Middltown/Middletown HS) in the weight (41- 5 ¼), sophomores Sam Buczek (Milford/Law HS) and  Jim Condren (Southington/Southington HS) at 5,000 meters (17:17.39 and 17:47.17, respectively); senior Michael Curley (Branford/Branford HS) and junior Nicholas Noheimer (Willimantic/Windham HS) in the mile (4:39.16 and 4:40.91, respectively); freshman Pat Cushing (East Lyme/East Lyme HS) at 500 meters (1:09.99), sophomores David Tignonsini (Vernon/Rockvlle HS) and Zack Konopka (Hebron/RHAM HS) and

freshmen Ken Landry (East Hampton/East Hampton HS)  and Kyle Driscoll (Plainfield/Plainfield HS) at 800 meters. Tignonsini was clocked at 2:06.06, Konopka at 2:08.14, Landry at 2:04.48 and Driscoll at 2:12.27.Freshman Nick Furlani (East Lyme/East Lyme HS) and Josh Styles (Branford/Branford) set a personal best at 200 meters (25:21 and 25.75, respectively).

Eastern  competes the U.S. Coast Guard Academy Jan. 19 at noon.
