Anchormen Rout Regionally-Ranked Vikings, 4-1

PROVIDENCE, R.I.—Junior forward Dan Rodrigues (Cumberland, R.I.) scored a career-high two goals, while sophomore midfielder Brandon Migliore (Coventry, R.I.) added a season-high three points, to lead Rhode Island College to a 4-1 win over Salem State on Wednesday afternoon at the RIC Soccer Field. The Anchormen raise their record to 8-4-2, while the Vikings, the ninth-ranked team in New England, lose for just the second time (9-2-1) this fall.

RIC held a nine-shot advantage (21-12) and a decisive, 12-6, mark in corner kicks.

Rodrigues put the Anchormen on the scoreboard in the 29th minute, taking a deflected pass from sophomore midfielder Mike Diogo (Bristol, R.I.) and breaking in for the game’s first tally. Migliore gave RIC a two-goal advantage in the 49th minute, firing in a free kick from 35 yards out.

Salem State got back into the contest in the 55th minute as junior forward Andrew Angus (Dorchester, Mass.) converted a senior midfielder Willer Nogueira (Everett, Mass.) crossing pass in the box.

Migliore then set up sophomore midfielder Jason Garcia (Providence, R.I.) for his first collegiate marker in the 77th minute, while Rodrigues notched his second goal in the 84th minute to put the game out of reach.

RIC freshman goalkeeper Justin O’Connor (North Kingstown, R.I.) made five saves to raise his personal mark to 7-2-2. The Vikings goal snapped a 537-minute scoreless streak for the rookie netminder.

Salem State senior goalkeeper Pavel Brzykcy (Krakow, Poland) made five saves as his record dips to 9-2-1.

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will resume the Little East Conference schedule at home against Plymouth State on Saturday, October 18.
