Keene State’s Season Ends with NCAA Tournament Loss at No. 16 Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y. – 16th-ranked SUNY Cortland scored four unanswered goals late in the second half to record a 4-1 come-from-behind victory over visiting Keene State College in the opening round of the 2017 NCAA Division III Field Hockey Championship Tournament Wednesday.

The Red Dragons improved to 18-3 with the win, their 13th in a row, and advance to face third ranked The College of New Jersey (15-3) Saturday. The Owls, who are receiving votes in this week's NFHCA Poll, ended the season with a record of 14-9.

The match was scoreless until the 44th minute when senior Casi Smith (Merrimack, N.H.) gave Keene State a 1-0 lead, putting home a rebound for her fourth goal of the season. Cortland took control of the game from there, scoring three goals in a span of six minutes to take the lead for good.

Junior Jessica Welsh (Hamilton, N.Y.) tied the game in the 55th minute with her shot from the top of the circle, and senior Megan O'Brien (Carmel, N.Y.) put the Red Dragons ahead three minutes later with a shot from 15 yards out. Classmate Liz Athing (Bay Shore, N.Y.) and junior Jess Gibaldi (Westbury, N.Y.) scored in the 61st and 67th minute, respectively, to cap the scoring in the game.

The Owls had their chances to get back on the board over the final 10 minutes, including three opportunities off penalty corners, but junior Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, Pa.) was up to the task, totaling six saves during that same span.

Sophomore Jordan LaRaus (Bedford Hills, N.Y.) totaled nine saves in goal for Keene State, while senior Kendal Brown (Belmont, Mass.) totaled three defensive saves.

Cortland out shot Keene State 23-18 in the match. The Owls had an 11-9 edge in penalty corners.
