Burke Earns ECAC Division III New England Award
BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Bridgewater State
University junior defender Mattie Burke has been named the Eastern
College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Field
Hockey Defensive Player of the Week.
Burke anchored a Bridgewater State defensive unit that gave up just
one goal in a pair of Little East Conference wins over Westfield
State and Worcester State last week. The Shrewsbury, Massachusetts
native and her teammates limited Westfield to just one shot in a
3-0 shutout victory. She also recorded a defensive save in a 6-1
win at Worcester.
Burke has started and played in 30 of the Bears' 31 games on
defense over the last two seasons. She has notched a pair of
defensive saves and has helped the Bears record seven shutouts,
including five this season, to go along with a team 1.75 goals
against average.
The BSU field hockey team is currently 10-1 on the season and tied
for first place in the Little East Conference (LEC) standings with
a 6-0 conference mark. The only other time that a Bridgewater State
field hockey team had one loss or less through the first eleven
games of the season was in 1985 when the squad started the year
9-1-1.
Earlier this week, Burke was also selected as the Little East Field
Hockey Defensive Player of the Week.
In upcoming action, the Bears host non-conference foe Anna Maria on
Thursday night at seven. Bridgewater caps off the week with a
Saturday home matinee with LEC rival Western Connecticut State at
3:30.
