Flaherty Earns ABCA New England Coach of the Year; D'Alfonso Named All-American

GORHAM, Maine -- For the second straight year, University of Southern Maine outfielder Anthony D’Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine) has been named to the ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association) Rawlings® NCAA Division III All-American teams that were released Friday.

A first team ABCA All-American in 2008, D’Alfonso was named to the third team this year. The 6-foot-4, 245-pound senior is the seventh USM player to be named an ABCA All-American multiple times. Earlier this week, D’Alfonso also was named to the D3baseball.com All-America second team.

In addition to the ABCA All-America teams and awards, it was announced the Southern Maine head coach Ed Flaherty had been named ABCA Rawlings® NCAA Division III Regional Coach of the Year.

The left-handed hitting D’Alfonso, the Little East Conference Player of the Year and first team all-conference pick, led the Huskies’ offense batting .438 (77 for 176) with 52 runs scored, 17 doubles, three triples, nine home runs and a single-season record 76 RBI. He also compiled a .722 slugging percentage and a .519 on-base percentage.

In two seasons since transferring to USM from Southern Maine Community College in the fall of 2007, D’Alfonso compiled a .414 batting average (158 for 382) with 110 runs scored, 30 doubles, six triples, 24 home runs and 138 RBI.

Flaherty, named the Little East Conference Coach of the Year and the New England Intercollegiate Baseball Association (NEIBA) Division III Coach of the Year earlier this month, guided Southern Maine to a 36-9 overall record, won the Little East Conference regular season title with a 12-2 mark and had USM ranked number one in the D3baseball.com poll for three straight weeks in late April, early May. Flaherty, who just completed his 24th season at USM, also won his milestone 700th game on March 25 defeating Calvin College in Arizona
