Ryan Pike and Colin Henry Named To Academic All-District 1st Team

GORHAM, Maine -- Two members of the University
of Southern Maine baseball team, junior designated hitter-pitcher
Collin Henry (Penobscot, Maine) and senior
outfielder Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine), have been
named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District One baseball
first team for the College Division.
The ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District team was chosen by
members of the College Sports Information Directors of America
(CoSIDA). CoSIDA selects Academic All America (r) teams for
University and College Divisions in 12 programs: football, women's
volleyball, men's and women's soccer, men's and women's basketball,
baseball, softball, men's and women's track & field/cross
country, men's and women's at large. Athletes named to the Academic
All-District first team become eligible for ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-America (r) honors.
Henry is a communication major with a 3.71 cumulative grade point
average (GPA). Pike is a business major with a 3.45 cumulative GPA.
To be eligible for nomination by a CoSIDA member at their
institution, a player must be a starter or important reserve with a
minimum cumulative GPA of 3.30 at his/her present institution,
participate in at least 50 percent of the team's games, and have
completed one full calendar year at his/her current institution and
has reached sophomore athletic eligibility.
Named today to the All-Little East Conference second team, Henry is
batting .335 (53 for 158) with 45 runs scored, a team-leading 19
doubles, two triple, five home runs and 53 RBI. He is tied for
second in the conference in doubles and leads the circuit in
sacrifice flies with six. He also has fashioned a 3-2 record with a
4.98 ERA on the mound. Henry was named the LEC Pitcher of the Week
on April 13, and the LEC Player of the Week on May 4.
A power-hitting outfielder, Pike is batting .359 (60 for 167) with
14 doubles, one triple, a team-leading 10 home runs, 65 RBI and 21
stolen bases. In the conference, he is ranked third in RBI and
fifth in home runs. Pike was the recipient of the LEC and ECAC
Division III New England Player of the Week awards on April 20.
Southern Maine, 35-7 overall, received a berth into the 2009 NCAA
Division III Baseball Championship Tournament that begins with
regional tournament play this Wednesday. The Huskies are the second
seed and will play seventh seed Husson University in the first
round (7:45 p.m.). The regional tournament is being played at the
ECSU Baseball Stadium in Mansfield, Conn.
