Plymouth State's McManus Earns 400th Win

PLYMOUTH, N.H. - Senior Marc
McGinnis (Hanover, Mass.) delivered a
walk-off single to right field in the bottom of the eighth inning
Sunday afternoon to help Plymouth State University clinch game two
and a doubleheader sweep over Southern Vermont College in
non-conference baseball action at Panther
Park.
The Panthers captured the first game, 9-5, and took the nightcap,
6-5 in eight innings. The two wins for PSU mark career victories
No. 399 and 400 for Panther head coach Dennis
McManus. The 25-year veteran coach is now 400-476-4,
becoming the 46th active Division III baseball coach
with 400
wins.
The eighth-inning hit was one of four in the nightcap for McGinnis,
including a triple and an RBI double. Four other Panthers
contributed two hits apiece - seniors Nick Englert
(North Woodstock, N.H.) and Jim
VanGyzen (Glocester, R.I.), junior
Steve Picco (Marshfield, Mass.)
and sophomore Bryant Lausberg
(Somersworth, N.H.), with Lausberg driving in two
runs.
Senior Chris Welch (South Burlington,
Vt.) recorded the win (1-1) for PSU with an inning of
shutout relief. Freshman Bobby Chatfield
(Sharon, Conn.) worked the first seven innings; he
allowed only one run on three hits through six innings before

SVC got on the board in the fourth inning when freshman Eric Wells
(Athens, Pa.) doubled and later scored on an infield out. The
Mountaineers knotted the game at 4-4 with three runs in the seventh
inning, highlighted by a clutch two-out, two-run triple by
sophomore Adam Northup (Richmond, R.I.).
Southern Vermont took its first lead of the game in the top of the
eighth on a suicide squeeze bunt by freshman Pete Metzler
(Lawrence, Kan.) The Panthers pulled out the win in the
bottom of the inning on RBI singles by Lausberg and McGinnis.
PSU also had to come from behind to win the opener, as Southern
Vermont scored three runs in the top of the first. The
Panther got one back in the bottom of the first, tied the game with
two more in the fourth, and took the lead for good with four runs
in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Lausberg and freshman Anthony Fallacaro
(Niskayuna, N.Y.) each went 3-for-3 for PSU to
lead a 15-hit attack, with Lausberg scoring three runs.
VanGyzen knocked in three runs with a double and a sacrifice fly,
sophomore Matt Koban (Bradford,
N.H.) and seniors Jay Kleponis
(Reading, Mass.) and Josh Roberti
(Cranston, R.I.) added two hits apiece, and freshman
Mike Cappiello (Westfield, N.J.)
hit his first career home run.
Freshman Jonathan Bishop (Woburn,
Mass.) picked up the win for PSU, evening his record at
2-2 with a complete-game effort.
Junior Brett Pawlak (Shelton, Conn.), sophomore Dan Cook
(Watervliet, N.Y.) and freshman Pat Warrington (Folcroft, Pa.)
collected two hits apiece in the opener for SVC, and Northup added
a two-run double in the seventh inning.
PSU, 11-17 overall, wraps up a seven-game home stand Monday with a
3:30 p.m. contest against Daniel Webster College. SVC, 9-21
overall, returns home to host Saint Joseph's Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.
